International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) on Thursday opened a new Costa Rica Delivery Center in the province of Heredia, north of the capital. Costa Rican vice presidents want gay couples’ rights
Costa Rican vice presidents Alfio Piva and Luis Liberman have endorsed equal rights for gay couples. The leaders spoke in favor of gay rights, including inheritance, social security and loan applications, and the endorsement comes after Costa Rican LGBT rights group, the Center for Research and Promotion of Human Rights in Central America (CIPAC), introduced a constitutional motion to legalize same-sex marriage.

Starbucks to sell Tico brand in Costa Rica store
Bella Vista Coffee, hailing from Tres Ríos, southeast of San José, will be the first Tico coffee for sale in Starbucks’ new Escazú location, southwest of the capital, the daily La Nación reported. The new store is the coffee giant’s first in Costa Rica. The chain, which has been a major buyer of Costa Rican coffee for years, will open its new store on Avenida Escazú sometime in the next two weeks, where patrons will find 250 gram bags of Bella Vista beans for sale.

Boomerang Coaster Moves From Brazil to Costa Rica
One park’s loss will become another park’s gain overseas, as Parque Diversiones, Costa Rica’s national amusement park in San José, will be receiving a boomerang coaster from Brazil. Boomerang is a standard “Boomerang” coaster from Vekoma Rides Manufacturing, standing 116’ 6” tall, and hitting a top speed of 47 mph as it traverses a cobra roll and vertical loop, first forwards then backwards.

Costa Rica is region’s best country to raise children, study says
A study released on Tuesday by nonprofit group Save the Children ranks Costa Rica 13th among a list of 80 countries based on conditions for raising children. The list divided 165 countries into three categories: more-developed (43 countries), less-developed (80) and least-developed (42). Costa Rica appears on the less-developed countries list, and was rated as the best in the region.

Innovations in Sustainability: The Use of Scrap Tires in Costa Rica
Costa Rica currently recycles or repurposes about half of the scrap tires that they produce. Because of a lack of infrastructure seen in more developed nations, they have created the Ecologic Foundation for the Recycling of Scrap Tires in Costa Rica in order to create llantions – which are essentially bunches of scrap tires to use for things such as construction projects, farms and artificial reefs.

Mobile access to the Internet in Costa Rica up by 250% from 2010
According to SUTEL, there are about 4 million active cellphones in Costa Rica. A study shows that 35% of the cellphone users have Internet access on their phone. This represents a dramatic increase from 14% in 2010. According to the survey, 26% of the users say they have smartphones. In raw numbers, this translates to 1.4 million users who use their phone for Internet access, and around 1.04 million have smartphones. The growth in smartphones directly contributes to and increases the number of phones connected to the internet.
